Combined Heat and Power and District Energy Systems

 Monday 15th April 2013

Ashburton Hall, Hampshire County Council, QEII Building

SO23 8UJ

Directions to Hampshire County Council

 What is it?

The Ecotec21 project, of which Hampshire County Council is a partner, seeks to improve energy efficiency by promoting Combined Heat and Power (CHP) from many fuels, including natural gas and biomass. This highly energy-efficient technology produces electricity and exploitable heat simultaneously and CHP engines may be powered by several types of combustible matter including glycerol and waste from the agricultural and wood industries, which Ecotec21 will test to study the resulting energy benefit. Please click here to visit the Ecotec21 website.

 Why attend?

This event is designed to increase knowledge of using CHP as a technology in District Energy schemes. District Energy schemes have recently been recognised in the Government’s document ‘The future of heating: a strategic framework for low carbon heat’ as a viable low carbon heat and electricity source for urban areas. We would like to present and discuss the establishment of potential CHP District Energy schemes; the delivery methods available; potential fuel sources and the Government’s view of such schemes.

 Who is attending?

This free of charge conference aims to bring local authorities, universities, research institutions, government funded organisations, energy and facility managers, designers and architects and elected members together to explore how delegates from the UK and France can collaborate and compare methods and practicalities of establishing CHP District Energy schemes in their respective regions.

There will also be an opportunity to visit a functioning natural gas fired CHP engine based at the University of Southampton and hear how the system has contributed to huge energy and cost savings across the estate. Please note that numbers for this tour are limited, so please indicate with your booking if you would like to attend.
